New acquisitions offer a glimpse into Hayle’s past

  February 9, 2022    Daisy Culmer

Recently we acquired from a local auction a Harvey & Co printing block and two desk stamps. One of the desk stamps is from R Hodge, Plumber, Penpol Terrace, the other a general document received stamp.

Stamps
Three new items recently acquired at auction.

The Harvey & Co printing block shows one of the boilers that Harvey’s produced. It is possibly from the Harvey & Co Hayle Foundry catalogue that showed the pumps, boilers, valves, engines, stampers and water wheels that Harvey’s produced in the late 1800s.

Mr R Hodge built the original ironmongers shop on Penpol Terrace in 1894. He was registered on the 1891 census as an ironmonger and plumber. One of Mr Hodges employees was a Mr Biggleston. When Mr Hodge died, Mr Biggleston bought the shop which from then on – until a few years ago – was known as “Bigglestons”.

We are very excited here at Hayle Heritage Centre to add these items to our collection.
