My Duke of Edinburgh Award and beyond…

  September 24, 2019    Daisy Culmer

Hello.

I’m Dougal and I volunteer once a week at the Hayle Heritage Centre. Originally, I came here looking to volunteer for 3 months as part of my Duke of Edinburgh award, but I’ve enjoyed it so much that I decided to keep on coming.

Part of what makes coming here so fun is the range of odd jobs that I’ve been tasked with. Over the past months I have; helped to assemble a display cabinet, constructed a toy robot and made a variety of examples for kid’s craft activities.

Quoit
My attempt at the area around Chun Quoit (amazing I know) but the day that this was offered as a craft activity over 30 kids showed up and took part.

But the work that I’m most proud of is the researching of my own panel on the history of a small village called Gwinear (about 3 miles from Hayle) where I live. It has been fascinating to find all this interesting information on the quiet, unassuming village in which I live.

Recently we received a first proof copy of my panel and am really impressed by what the designers have come up with so far:

However there are several challenges to working with any external partner (in this case the design company/printers) such as conveying what edits I’d like done via e-mail. This is a lengthy but satisfying process so I am looking forward to seeing it when it is done.

I hope to keep you all updated on my progress here, Dougal.S.
