Curating and Creating with St Erth Girl Guides

  February 11, 2025    Daisy Culmer

For the last few weeks, we have welcomed the 1st St Erth Guide Unit on Tuesday evenings for a Mini Museum Takeover. Devised and delivered by Arts Producer Liz Howell, the sessions develop skills in museum interpretation and curation.

Hayle Heritage Centre Curator Daisy shows the Guides a selection of artefacts.

In the first session, the Guides were introduced to parts of the Heritage Centre’s permanent collection: a selection of objects and archival items relating to Hayle Power Station, Harvey & Co., Daniel’s Supermarket, J&F Pool and more. Liz then worked with the Guides to identify themes and connections within and between the items and to consider what story they’d ultimately like their exhibition to tell. The session concluded with an observational drawing activity.

The Guides practice some observational drawing.

In Week 2, the Guides narrowed their idea down to a story of Hayle in two parts: industry and nature. Together, they created a large mural working with paints, crayons and pencils. The young people created some fantastic work, with imagery of Black Bridge, the Millponds, and the viaduct, inspired by the objects they observed the week before.

Arts Producer Liz Howell (centre back) works with the Guides to identify themes and the groups prepares to begin a large mural inspired by the artefacts they’ve seen.

Keep an eye out to see how the project develops and concludes!

The Mini Museum Takeover is part of a wider Activity Plan, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund.
